Whether it’s the espresso or energy drink, we tend to rely on caffeine to wake us up or to keep us going through late-night pending work. Caffeine is generally found in beverages such as coffee, tea and also in energy drinks. It has the ability to stimulate the central nervous system and helps reduce fatigue and tiredness. But besides these benefits, it also has potential side-effects.
Some amount of caffeine consumption is safe, but too much of it can have adverse effects on your health. High amounts may leave you with headache, nausea, anxiety, depression, frequent urination, restlessness, insomnia and rapid heartbeat. You may also experience caffeine intoxication, a condition that can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, muscle weakness and weight loss. Caffeine is also one of the most common triggers of heart burn and acid reflux.
People who drink more than three cups of coffee a day are scientifically proven to have restless sleep. Also, if you are trying to get pregnant, it’s certainly worth cutting down on coffee as drinking more than 5 cups of coffee a day can impact your fertility.
It would be a good idea to limit your caffeine intake to 400 mg per day or switch to lightly brewed herbal tea like chamomile tea or green tea.
